Nowadays, however, no one relies on such basic solutions anymore. Today’s server environments are built as high-availability clusters.

How does high-availability clustering work?
High-availability cluster is a group of devices which provide continued service when one or more of the system components fail. Such a cluster is managed by dedicated software, such as Vmware vSphere or Microsoft Hyper-V.
High-availability cluster design requirements
In order for the cluster to work, the following conditions have to be fulfilled, in terms of both software and hardware.
- At least two servers (hosts, nodes) are needed
- All servers in the cluster must have access to the same shared storage
- Virtualisation management software is necessary
- At least two LAN switches and minimum of two SAN switches are required – their number depends on the complexity of the infrastructure.
High-availability clustering – benefits
Without clustering, if a server running a particular application crashes, the application will be unavailable until the crashed server is fixed. High-availability clustering prevents this situation by detecting faults, and immediately restarting the application on another system. This process, which does not require administrative intervention is known as failover.
The high-availability cluster is resistant to the failure of one element of a given type:

matrix failure does not cause downtime at work, because it is made of two equal controllers in which the configuration is saved and two power supplies;

server failure - each server should be equipped with two power supplies, because these components fail most often, and if another server component fails, the management software will switch resources to a functioning server;

switches – two physical switches are used and organized into one logical entity (stack); when one of them fails, some connections are inactive, but the server environment will still be available."
